The International Conference on “Responsible Production in the Plastic Value Chain” was organized by the National Association of Polymer Industries of Iran, with the participation of senior government officials, representatives of the private sector, polymer industry specialists, and environmental experts.
The conference, held at the National Library’s International Conference Center, focused on reducing plastic pollution within the framework of sustainable development and reviewed the latest developments in international environmental negotiations.
Luis Vayas, Chair of the International Negotiating Committee on the Plastic Pollution Treaty (INC), participated as the special guest of the event and discussed the formation process of the Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution.
Throughout the event, officials and experts from the Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of Environment presented their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities related to achieving responsible production and advancing a circular economy.
Dr. Torkaman, Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Polymer Industries of Iran, emphasized the importance of presenting an Iranian perspective on plastic pollution and highlighted the need for synergy among the government, industry, and academia. He described the conference as a step toward strengthening Iran’s position in international negotiations and enhancing cooperation among polymer industry stakeholders.
Later, Dr. Abbaszadeh, Deputy Minister of Petroleum and CEO of the National Petrochemical Industries Company, stressed the balance between industrial development and environmental protection, stating: “Raising public awareness and providing genuine support for companies active in recycling are essential requirements for achieving sustainable production.”
Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Environment also referred to global negotiations under international conventions such as Basel and Stockholm, calling for effective cooperation among developing countries and the use of modern technologies in waste management.
In the conference’s final panel, experts and industry leaders responded to participants’ questions on plastic recycling, sustainable design, development of environmental standards, and the future of international cooperation.
The conference aimed to foster a shared understanding among government, industry, and academia while emphasizing Iran’s role in global environmental negotiations.
